Being a Navy SEAL Is What He Did. Not Who He Is. | Andy Stumpf

Andy Stumpf spent more than 17 years as a Navy SEAL, served with SEAL Team Six, became a record-setting wingsuit pilot, author, entrepreneur and host of the Cleared Hot podcast.

But those are things he's done. They aren't who he is.

We traveled to Montana to sit down with Andy for a conversation about what happens when the identity you've spent your life building starts to disappear.

Andy talks about nearly losing his Trident early in his career, what the military taught him about good and bad leadership, leaving the SEAL Teams after being injured, and why attaching your identity to your occupation can make moving on so difficult.

But this conversation goes well beyond the military.

Andy opens up about failure, divorce, marriage, fatherhood, raising children, building businesses, finding happiness, and why he tries not to measure his life by accomplishments.

He also explains why he moved his family to Montana, what he's learned from years of podcasting, and why he believes chasing numbers and using the “dirty cheat codes” of content creation eventually comes at a cost.

And when we ask Andy the question we ask every guest “What do you value most in life?” his answer is immediate: Truth.

That answer leads to a candid discussion about Roberts Ridge, John Chapman, the Medal of Honor, the Rangers who fought on Takur Ghar, and Andy's years-long effort to understand what actually happened on that mountain.

This is Andy Stumpf beyond the résumé.
